Crystal Springs was a place we always drove by on the way out to Bismarck to visit my wife's relatives.
We had stopped a few times to take pictures of the school and church, but had never ventured to the other side of the highway
onto old Highway 10. By the springs are three abandoned homes, a shack of some kind, and I am told the foundation and ruins
of an old gas station.
The town itself is named after the numerous springs in the area. The town was platted in 1882 and
the post office opened in 1884. The population never went over 100, and just 20 residents remained by 1960. There seems
to be only one person in the town at this time.
On the south side of the interstate, you can see the school and the church from the highway and you
can get there by taking the Crystal Springs exit. If you go north at the exit you can find the springs and the ruins of at
least three homes and some other buildings.
The spring was a favorite stopping place on old highway 10. After the interstate came through,
the rest stop and any businesses there died off. The spring still is there, and the water is quite refreshing.
